To help you better understand which Bosch e-bike motors are compatible with the EBT Unlock Key, we’ve included an overview of the differences between Gen1, Gen2, Gen3, and Gen4 systems. Learn which version you have – and whether browser-based tuning is possible.
Bosch’s first generation, often referred to as the Classic+ Line, includes systems with either HMI or Intuvia displays. The EBT Unlock Key only supports the Intuvia variant (BES1), which shows full and correct speed values. HMI displays are not supported. Bosch Gen2 Tuning – Active & Performance Line (2014–2017)
Gen2 motors brought a significant step forward in Bosch’s evolution. These systems use BES1 connectors and are compatible with the EBT Unlock Key. Bosch Gen3 Tuning – Active Line Plus & Performance (from 2018)
Gen3 systems marked Bosch’s transition to the BES2 connector (round plug). The EBT Unlock Key works well with these systems, but like Gen2, speed values appear halved on the display. Bosch Gen4 Tuning – Performance Line CX (up to 2022)
Gen4 Performance Line CX motors are widely used in eMTBs and trekking bikes. The key distinction is between BES2 and BES3 versions. If your Gen4 motor uses the round charging port, it’s BES2 – and fully compatible with the EBT Unlock Key. Compatibility Tip: Not all Gen4 motors are the same. There are two versions:
Gen4 with BES2 (round charging port): Compatible with the EBT Unlock Key
Gen4 with BES3 (square charging port / Smart System): Not compatible
In the UK and other markets, the BES3 version is often referred to as “Bosch Smart System” or “Performance Line CX with LED Remote.” If your Bosch Gen4 motor has a square charging port and uses a Kiox 300 or LED Remote, it is likely a BES3 system.
