Bosch Smart System Tuning: 32 km/h or 45 km/h – Which EBTsmart Setup Is Right for You?

Bosch Smart System tuning is not only about removing the 25 km/h limit. For many riders, the real question is: Should I choose the clean 32 km/h setup or do I need the stronger 45 km/h option?

With the EBTsmart Unlock Key, compatible Bosch Smart System bikes can be unlocked directly in the browser — without a chip, without an app, without motor disassembly and without installing software.

However, not every Bosch Smart System bike can use every tuning stage. If the 45 km/h option does not appear after purchase, this usually means that something in the bike configuration prevents it. Typical reasons include ABS, e-Shift, rim magnet configuration, BDU logic, firmware behaviour or another system-specific limitation.

1. First: EBT Unlock Key or EBTsmart Unlock Key?

Before discussing 32 km/h and 45 km/h, it is important to choose the correct Bosch product family.

  • EBT Unlock Key: for many compatible Bosch Gen1, Gen2, Gen3 and classic Gen4 systems on BES1 / BES2. Product page: EBT Unlock Key
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key: for compatible Bosch Smart System / BES3 bikes. Product page: EBTsmart Unlock Key
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key Switch: for selected compatible Bosch Smart System setups where the higher 45 km/h logic is supported. Product page: EBTsmart Unlock Key Switch

A simple first check is the charging port:

  • Round charging port: usually Bosch BES2 → EBT Unlock Key
  • Square charging port: Bosch Smart System / BES3 → EBTsmart Unlock Key

If you are not sure whether your bike is BES2 or BES3, read this guide first: Bosch BES2 or Bosch BES3: Identify Your Bosch E-Bike .

2. The Clean Option: 32 km/h with Correct Display Values

For many Bosch Smart System riders, the 32 km/h stage is the most practical and balanced option.

This stage raises motor assistance from the factory 25 km/h limit to approximately 32 km/h. The key advantage: speed, distance and mileage values remain correct.

  • Motor assistance up to approx. 32 km/h
  • Correct speed display
  • Correct distance and mileage values
  • No additional tuning hardware required
  • Browser-based activation
  • Fully reversible

This makes the 32 km/h setup especially attractive for riders who want a noticeable increase in support speed while keeping the system behaviour as clean as possible.

Best for:
Riders who want a clean Bosch Smart System unlock with correct display values and without additional hardware.

3. The Stronger Option: 45 km/h Where Supported

The higher 45 km/h option is designed for selected compatible Bosch Smart System setups. It is a stronger and more specialized tuning stage.

Unlike the 32 km/h stage, the 45 km/h setup can involve different system behaviour. From around 22 km/h, displayed speed and mileage values may no longer remain fully accurate. Depending on the configuration, values can deviate because the bike’s internal speed logic is handled differently.

  • Motor assistance up to approx. 45 km/h where supported
  • Only available on compatible configurations
  • May require the correct Smart System / rim magnet setup
  • Display and mileage values may deviate above approx. 22 km/h
  • Not available with ABS
  • More dependent on the exact bike configuration
Important:
The 45 km/h option is not a universal feature for every Bosch Smart System bike. If your system configuration does not support it, the option may not appear during activation.

4. Why 45 km/h Is Not Simply “Better” Than 32 km/h

Many riders assume that the higher number is automatically the better choice. In practice, that is not always true.

The 32 km/h stage is often the cleaner everyday solution because it keeps the Bosch Smart System values correct. The 45 km/h option is more performance-oriented and depends much more heavily on the bike’s exact configuration.

Feature 32 km/h Setup 45 km/h Setup
Display values Correct May deviate from approx. 22 km/h
Mileage values Correct May deviate
ABS compatibility Possible on compatible Smart System bikes Not available with ABS
Configuration sensitivity Lower Higher
Best use case Clean daily setup Private-property performance setup

5. Why the 45 km/h Option May Not Appear After Purchase

If you bought an EBTsmart Unlock Key and the 45 km/h option is not visible during activation, this does not automatically mean that something is broken.

It usually means that the system check has detected a configuration where the higher stage is not available.

Possible reasons include:

  • ABS: Bosch Smart System bikes with ABS are limited to the 32 km/h stage.
  • e-Shift: some electronic shifting configurations can affect available tuning stages.
  • Rim magnet configuration: the 45 km/h logic depends strongly on the speed sensor setup.
  • BDU variant: the exact drive unit code can influence what is technically available.
  • Firmware behaviour: newer firmware versions can change system behaviour.
  • Display or remote combination: some Smart System setups behave differently depending on components.
  • Other system limitations: Bosch Smart System bikes can vary more than older BES2 systems.
In short:
If the 45 km/h option is not shown, your bike configuration probably prevents it. The 32 km/h stage may still be available and is often the cleanest supported option.

6. ABS: The Most Important Special Case

ABS is one of the clearest and most important limitations.

If your Bosch Smart System bike has ABS, the EBTsmart Unlock Key can still be relevant — but only up to approximately 32 km/h. The optional 45 km/h stage is not available with ABS.

  • EBT Unlock Key: ABS is not supported
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key: ABS may be supported up to 32 km/h
  • 45 km/h stage: not available with ABS

If your bike has ABS, do not expect the 45 km/h option to appear.

7. e-Shift and Other Smart System Configurations

Bosch Smart System bikes can include additional components such as e-Shift, DualBattery, different remotes, different displays and various sensor configurations.

These details matter more on Smart System bikes than on older Bosch systems. Two bikes can both be “Bosch Smart System”, but still behave differently during activation.

That is why the EBTsmart Unlock Key performs a system-specific check during the process. If a stronger stage is not available, the tool does not simply force it. Instead, it only offers what the detected configuration supports.

8. Rim Magnet vs. Classic Speed Sensor

The rim magnet is another important factor in Bosch Smart System tuning.

Many newer Bosch Smart System bikes use a rim magnet instead of a classic spoke magnet. This affects how the bike measures speed and how tuning stages can be implemented.

For the standard 32 km/h stage, many compatible Smart System bikes with or without rim magnet can be supported. For the stronger 45 km/h logic, the exact sensor setup becomes more important.

If you are specifically looking for the stronger setup, check the EBTsmart Unlock Key Switch and make sure your configuration is suitable.

9. What Should You Do If 45 km/h Is Not Available?

If the 45 km/h option does not appear, follow this practical checklist:

  1. Check whether your bike has ABS.
  2. Check whether your bike uses e-Shift.
  3. Check whether your bike has a rim magnet or a classic speed sensor.
  4. Check the exact BDU code in the Bosch eBike Flow App.
  5. Check whether your product is the standard EBTsmart Unlock Key or the Switch version.
  6. Use the 32 km/h stage if this is the supported option for your bike.

11. Responsible Use

Unlocking or modifying the speed limit of an e-bike can change its legal classification. In many countries, tuned e-bikes are not permitted on public roads unless they meet the required approval, insurance, registration and equipment rules.

MountainTuning products are intended for private property, testing environments and legally permitted use only. Always check your local laws before using any tuning solution.

12. Final Summary: 32 km/h Is Clean, 45 km/h Is Configuration-Dependent

The EBTsmart Unlock Key gives compatible Bosch Smart System bikes a clean, modern and browser-based way to increase motor assistance without installing a chip or opening the motor.

The 32 km/h stage is often the best all-round solution because it keeps display, distance and mileage values correct. The 45 km/h option is stronger, but it is not available on every bike and may be blocked by ABS, e-Shift, rim magnet logic, BDU configuration, firmware behaviour or another system-specific limitation.

If the 45 km/h option does not appear after purchase, this usually means that your bike configuration does not support it. In that case, the 32 km/h stage remains the clean and supported option for many Smart System bikes.
