Which Bosch Tuning Solution Do I Need? BES1 vs BES2 vs BES3 Explained

Which Bosch Tuning Solution Do I Need? BES1 vs BES2 vs BES3 Explained

If you are looking for the right Bosch tuning solution, one question matters more than almost anything else: Which Bosch system do you actually have?

Many riders search for terms such as Bosch Gen2 tuning, Bosch Gen4 tuning or Bosch Smart System tuning. The problem is that Bosch naming can be confusing. In real-world compatibility terms, the key is not just the motor name, but the underlying electronic platform: BES1, BES2 or BES3.

At MountainTuning, the logic is clear:

  • EBT Unlock Key = for many compatible Bosch Gen1 to Gen4 bikes on BES1 / BES2
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key = for many compatible Bosch Smart System / BES3 bikes, including many setups with or without rim magnet

In this guide, we will explain the Bosch generations one by one, show you how to distinguish Gen4 BES2 from Gen4 BES3, and help you understand which unlock key matches your bike.

Why Bosch System Logic Matters More Than the Motor Name

Bosch e-bike motors are commonly grouped into generations:

  • Gen1
  • Gen2
  • Gen3
  • Gen4
  • Gen5

But from a tuning point of view, the more useful classification is:

  • BES1 = Bosch Gen1 / Classic Line
  • BES2 = Bosch Gen2, Gen3 and classic Gen4
  • BES3 = Bosch Smart System, including Gen4 BES3 and Gen5 BES3

This distinction is essential because the correct product does not depend on “CX”, “Performance Line” or “Gen4” alone. It depends on the full Bosch platform your bike actually uses.

The most important rule of all:

Round charging port = BES2 = EBT Unlock Key
Square charging port = BES3 / Bosch Smart System = EBTsmart Unlock Key

Bosch Gen1 BES1 Tuning – Classic Line and Related BES1 Systems

Bosch Gen1 is the original Bosch e-bike generation, also known as the Classic Line. It belongs to the BES1 world and is therefore clearly separate from later Gen2, Gen3, Gen4 and Smart System bikes.

For many compatible Bosch Gen1 bikes, the correct product is the EBT Unlock Key.

Bosch Gen1 remains especially interesting because it is one of the cleanest Bosch generations for software-based unlocking. On supported setups, display values remain correct after unlocking.

However, there is one important exclusion: Bosch Gen1 with HMI display is not supported.

If your bike is Bosch Gen1 but uses Intuvia, it belongs to the compatible Gen1 world. If it uses HMI, it is excluded from the standard EBT licence logic.

Bosch Gen2 BES2 Tuning – Active, Performance and Performance CX

Bosch Gen2 belongs to the BES2 platform. That means it is part of the same broader Bosch world as Gen3 and classic Gen4, but not part of the newer Smart System family.

For many compatible Bosch Gen2 bikes, the correct product is the EBT Unlock Key.

Bosch Gen2 introduced a stronger and more performance-oriented Bosch platform, and many trekking, commuting and performance bikes still use it today. The main limitation is often not the motor itself, but simply the factory 25 km/h support limit.

One important practical note: on Bosch Gen2 / BES2, the display typically shows divided values while riding after unlocking. In simple terms, the displayed speed is usually about half of the actual riding speed. This is normal Bosch BES2 behaviour and not a fault.

Bosch Gen3 BES2 Tuning – Active Line and Active Line Plus

Bosch Gen3 also belongs to the BES2 platform. These motors are especially common on city, trekking and comfort-oriented bikes and are widely appreciated for their smooth, quiet support.

For many compatible Bosch Gen3 bikes, the correct product is again the EBT Unlock Key.

From a compatibility perspective, Gen3 behaves very similarly to Gen2:

  • it belongs to BES2
  • it uses the EBT Unlock Key
  • the display typically shows divided values while riding

So while Gen3 may look more modern than earlier Bosch systems, it is still part of the classic Bosch unlock world — not the Smart System world.

Bosch Gen4 Is the Most Important Turning Point

Bosch Gen4 is where many riders choose the wrong tuning product.

Why? Because Gen4 exists in two different Bosch worlds:

  • Gen4 BES2 = classic Gen4
  • Gen4 BES3 = Bosch Smart System Gen4

That means the label “Bosch Gen4” alone is no longer precise enough. You must determine whether your Gen4 bike still belongs to the older BES2 platform or already belongs to the newer BES3 / Smart System platform.

The easiest first check is still the charging connector:

  • Round charging port = BES2
  • Square charging port = BES3 / Smart System

Bosch Gen4 BES2 Tuning – Classic Gen4 Before the Smart System Transition

Bosch Gen4 on BES2 is still part of the classic Bosch unlock world and therefore uses the EBT Unlock Key.

These bikes often use display families such as Purion, Intuvia, Nyon or Kiox, but the most practical hardware clue remains the round charging port.

From a riding and display point of view, Gen4 BES2 behaves like the rest of the BES2 family:

  • support can be unlocked with the EBT Unlock Key
  • display values are typically divided while riding
  • ABS is not supported

Bosch Gen4 BES3 Tuning – Bosch Smart System Gen4 Setups

Bosch Gen4 on BES3 already belongs to the Bosch Smart System. These bikes do not use the regular EBT Unlock Key. Instead, they require the EBTsmart Unlock Key.

This is one of the most important distinctions in the entire Bosch range:

  • Gen4 BES2 = EBT Unlock Key
  • Gen4 BES3 = EBTsmart Unlock Key

Bosch Gen4 BES3 bikes often use Smart System components such as:

  • Kiox 300
  • Kiox 500
  • Intuvia 100
  • Purion 200
  • LED Remote
  • Flow app

One of the major strengths of the EBTsmart Unlock Key is its two-stage unlock logic:

  • Stage 1: support up to 32 km/h with correct display values
  • Stage 2: optional support up to 45 km/h, but displayed values are no longer accurate from around 22 km/h

Bosch Gen5 BES3 Tuning – Bosch Smart System Gen5 Setups

Bosch Gen5 belongs fully to the BES3 / Smart System world. That means it uses the EBTsmart Unlock Key rather than the regular EBT Unlock Key.

Functionally, Gen5 follows the same Smart System logic as newer BES3 bikes:

  • Stage 1: up to 32 km/h with correct values
  • Stage 2: optional up to 45 km/h, but display values are no longer accurate from around 22 km/h

Bosch Gen5 is also where more complex Smart System compatibility factors become especially relevant, such as:

  • BDU logic
  • rim magnet vs. non-rim magnet
  • ABS
  • e-Shift
  • DualBattery

Stage 1 vs Stage 2 on Bosch Smart System – What Is the Difference?

One of the most useful advantages of the EBTsmart Unlock Key is that it does not force every rider into the same setup.

Stage 1 – up to 32 km/h

In Stage 1, support is increased up to 32 km/h, while speed, distance and mileage remain correct. For many Smart System riders, this is the most balanced setup because it keeps the display behaviour clean and predictable.

Stage 2 – optional up to 45 km/h

In Stage 2, support can optionally be extended up to 45 km/h. The trade-off is that display values are no longer accurate from around 22 km/h. That means this mode offers more freedom, but not the same display accuracy as Stage 1.

Simple rule:
Stage 1 = up to 32 km/h with correct values
Stage 2 = up to 45 km/h with changed display behaviour from around 22 km/h

ABS, Rim Magnet and BDU Logic – Why Smart System Needs More Precision

In the older Bosch world, the basic generation often told you almost everything you needed. In the Smart System world, that is no longer enough.

On Bosch BES3 / Smart System, final compatibility depends on a more detailed combination of factors:

  • BDU code
  • rim magnet or not
  • ABS
  • e-Shift
  • overall Smart System configuration

ABS is especially important:

  • EBT Unlock Key: ABS is not supported
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key: ABS is supported only up to 32 km/h
  • 45 km/h stage: not available with ABS

That means Bosch Smart System bikes often require a more careful compatibility check than older BES2 bikes.

Quick Decision Guide – Which Bosch Tuning Solution Do I Need?

Why Browser-Based Unlocking Is So Attractive

MountainTuning’s unlock logic is different from classic hardware tuning in one important way: it is built around a licence-key-based browser solution, not around a visible add-on part.

That means:

  • no chip
  • no dongle
  • no motor disassembly
  • no software installation
  • fully reversible

For many riders, that makes EBT and EBTsmart one of the cleanest ways to unlock a compatible Bosch e-bike.

Final Thoughts

If you want the right Bosch tuning solution, do not start with the motor name alone. Start with the system logic:

  • BES1 = Bosch Gen1
  • BES2 = Bosch Gen2, Gen3, classic Gen4
  • BES3 = Bosch Smart System, including Gen4 BES3 and Gen5 BES3

Once you know that, the product decision becomes much easier:

  • EBT Unlock Key for many compatible BES1 / BES2 systems
  • EBTsmart Unlock Key for many compatible BES3 / Smart System systems

If you are still unsure, the safest first question is simple: Do you have a round charging port or a square charging port?
